What is Volunteering?
Volunteering is an act of an individual or group offering their time and skills to contribute to a community or objective. Volunteering is unpaid and it is based on free will and choice. Volunteer activities are often organized by organizations, associations, parishes, or other communities, with the aim of, for example, supporting social services, helping disadvantaged people or promoting physical activity, culture, and the well-being of the environment. Civic engagement (the fourth sector, which is not linked to the organization) also falls under volunteering.
Volunteering offers volunteers the opportunity to develop their skills, create new relationships, and gain meaningful experiences as a part of society. Participation in volunteer activities increases the social capital of the entire society, or trust, reciprocity and networking that promote the functioning of the community and society.
General Values and Principles of
The values of volunteering are the key principles that guide the activities and make them meaningful for both the individual and the community. The most common values of volunteer activities are:
Freedom and voluntariness – Participation in volunteer activities is voluntary and based on the individual’s desires and interests. Freedom also means that volunteers can choose activities that align with their values and fit their schedule. Volunteers may also always say no.
No pay – Volunteers participate in volunteer activities because they want to and without financial compensation.
Right to support and guidance – New volunteers are introduced to the activities and training is provided where necessary. Each volunteer must also have a contact person they can contact if any problems arise.
Humanity and empathy – Volunteering is based on compassion and the drive to help others. Empathy and humanity are basic values that spur volunteers to help others and to take the needs of others into account.
Equality and fairness – Volunteering aims to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate and get help regardless of their background. Fairness also means equal treatment and actions that promote equality for all in the community.
Community development – The aim of volunteer activities is to promote the well-being of the community for the common good. The goal is to make a lasting and positive impact on the community and to increase general well-being.
